When to pick each

Angular Material — pick this when

  • Your project follows Material Design 3 visually
  • You need guaranteed compatibility with every Angular release
  • You're building consumer-facing apps (not admin dashboards)
  • Your team benefits from Google's official long-term support
  • You plan to use Angular Material's CDK primitives (overlays, virtual scroll, drag-drop, testing harnesses) heavily

The honest trade-off: Fewer components than PrimeNG — no rich data table, no chart integration, no scheduler, no rich text editor. Teams often use Angular Material as the base and pull in PrimeNG components where Material falls short.

PrimeNG — pick this when

  • You need a large component library under one MIT roof
  • Your app needs data tables, charts (via Chart.js), file uploaders, image editors, or schedulers — things Angular Material doesn't ship
  • You want multiple built-in themes and a visual theme designer
  • You're building internal tools or admin portals where the Aura design system works

The honest trade-off: More breaking changes between major versions than Angular Material. Data table performance lags behind commercial grids at very large row counts (10k+). Theming customization can feel complex. The library's sheer size means tree-shaking matters — import only what you use.

NG-ZORRO (Ant Design Angular) — pick this when

  • Your design system is or can follow Ant Design
  • You're building an admin dashboard or internal enterprise tooling
  • Your user base is primarily in markets where Ant Design is the expected aesthetic
  • You want a clean, professional look out of the box without heavy theming work

The honest trade-off: The Ant Design aesthetic is opinionated — it fits enterprise admin panels well but feels wrong for consumer-facing products. Performance can degrade with very large datasets compared to commercial grids.

DevExtreme — pick this when

  • Your app is a data-heavy dashboard with large grids (50k+ rows), pivot tables, or schedulers
  • You need a commercially-supported library with SLA guarantees
  • The application is internal or commercial (licensing cost is acceptable)
  • You need the scheduler/calendar component specifically — DevExtreme's scheduler is best-in-class

The honest trade-off: Commercial license starts at ~$1,295+/year. Not suitable for open-source projects. The API is more verbose than Material or PrimeNG.

Syncfusion — pick this when

  • You need commercial-grade components but have budget constraints
  • Your team or company earns under $1M/year (free community license)
  • You specifically need a fast Angular Data Grid, spreadsheet component, PDF viewer, or diagram tool
  • Gantt charts or Kanban boards are part of the app

The honest trade-off: The community license threshold ($1M revenue) means you'll eventually pay once you succeed. Components work, but the DX (developer experience) is more verbose than PrimeNG.

Taiga UI — pick this when

  • You want a signal-forward library built for modern Angular
  • Strong DX and maintainer responsiveness are priorities
  • You're comfortable with a newer, growing library (smaller community than PrimeNG or Material)
  • You want 130+ components including some (like combobox, input date range) that are better than equivalent PrimeNG versions

The honest trade-off: Smaller community than the big three. Less third-party content (tutorials, Stack Overflow answers). Growing fast but not yet at PrimeNG scale.

Mixing libraries — common and fine

Libraries are not mutually exclusive. A common real-world pattern:

  • Angular Material for the app shell (toolbar, sidebar, routing, forms, basic inputs)
  • PrimeNG Table or AG Grid for the one or two complex data tables the app needs
  • Custom components (built on Angular CDK) for anything that needs to match the brand closely

Using @angular/cdk as the foundation for custom components means your custom work gets overlay management, focus trapping, virtual scrolling, and a11y utilities for free, regardless of which UI library you chose for pre-built components.

What they all share (in Angular 22)

Regardless of which library you pick:

  • All support standalone component imports — import only what you use
  • All work with Angular signals in templates (they render in @if/@for blocks normally)
  • All recommend provideAnimations() or provideAnimationsAsync() in your providers
  • All work with Angular CDK testing harnesses (or their own equivalent)
  • None require Zone.js specifically, though behavior in fully zoneless apps varies by library — check each library's changelog for zoneless status
